Stanchions must come down by end of the month

Wood Buffalo’s Regional Municipalities Community Standards Bylaw states that residents have until the end of March to remove their stanchion from their property.

Residents are not allowed to run an extension cord across a public walkway and in turn, they are asked to install a stanchion or sturdy pole that stands 2.4 metres above the ground to suspend a cord to their vehicle from November 1 to March 30.

Failure to remove a stanchion by the end of the month can lead to a fine of $125.

Bylaw Officers have personal discretion when receiving complaints and they tend to favour an education approach first before issuing a fine, according to Communications & Engagement Strategist Greg Bennett.

Bennett commented that stanchions are not a major problem, and the municipality had no issues last winter.
