The Alberta Major Crimes Unit confirmed in a press release on Tuesday that human remains were found in Fort McMurray on Monday.

Police have said that they believe the death to be suspicious and that an autopsy is scheduled for later in the week.

RCMP have said they will provide further details on the investigation on Wednesday.

They have so far not provided any details on where the body was located, the gender, or age of the victim.

Police say there is currently no threat to public safety.
