Wood Buffalo Municipal Council have settled on a name for the new park that’s under development in Beacon Hill, “Reflections Lookout”.
The new park is being made in commemoration of the region’s devastating fire that heavily impacted Fort McMurray in 2016.
The name was a combined effort from the Community Identification Committee alongside extensive public engagement.
Words such as wildfire, resilience, and memorial were out of the question for the committee when it came to naming the park as they felt it could trigger negative emotions in people.
They wanted a name that focused on people reflecting on that time while at the lookout, which made the name that much easier.
Reflections Lookout is in an area that affords it views over spaces that were devastated by the fire such as Grayling Terrace, Waterways, Abasand, Downtown, and Responder’s Way.
The park is in its tendering stage and Mayor Sandy Bowman commented that the park should begin construction this spring when the seasons allow.
