Fatality at Suncor Base Plant

Wood Buffalo RCMP have confirmed that one person has been pronounced deceased at Suncor’s Base Plant Mine north of Fort McMurray.

Suncor representative Carly Robertson stated that the accident had involved two haul trucks at approximately 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning which caused the fatality of a contractor, and that two others are being treated for their injuries.

“We would like to send out our deepest condolences to the friends and families of the individuals involved,” Robertson commented.

“What we’re focused on right now is that the site is safe and that all the employees are safe and taken care of.”

The area of the incident has been shut down until the RCMP investigation has been completed.

More information will be ongoing from RCMP, Suncor, and the contractor company that was also involved.

Update- Wood Buffalo RCMP have released their preliminary investigation and revealed that a collision occurred between two heavy haulers in the open mine on site.

A 51-year-old male from Fort McMurray was the lone occupant of one of the trucks and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The two others injured were a female that received onsite medical treatment and a male that was treated for minor injuries at local hospital.
