Council passes transportation committee motion in hopes to address Fort McMurray’s “one road in, one road out”

During the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s council meeting on Monday, the motion to create a Regional Transportation Committee passed unanimously.

Councillor Keith McGrath put forward the motion to create the Committee made up of members of council, mayor, indigenous partners, industry partners and CAO to advocate to the provincial government on transportation matters.

An example McGrath spoke passionately about was completing a new road to connect Fort McMurray more directly to Grande Prairie and B.C. to move more product and materials to the west.

He commented that with the amount of dangerous goods that gets hauled in and out of the community, it’s lucky it hasn’t been shut down.

“One road in, one road out” is how he described Fort McMurray’s access to the province.

“I’m not suggesting a ring road.” But Councillor McGrath said that he believes the biggest piece missing in the community is better transportation.
