Sheila Lalonde Looking To Get Re-Elected As Ward 3 Councillor

Sheila Lalonde is looking to be elected to another term on Wood Buffalo council.

She was first elected as Councillor for Ward 3, which represents Draper and Saprae Creek, back in 2017.

She ended up defeating Brad Lucier by just 19 votes, officially replacing Allan Vinni who tried to become Mayor.

Lalonde tells Mix News she’s simply not finished and wants to come back.

“We had COVID, we had the flood, we had a bunch of stuff going on and we still need Draper issues done.”

This includes flood mitigation, slope stability, paving streets, rural water & sewer, second egress roads, and more.

During the term, Lalonde took some heat for several motions she voted against.

This included the work camp moratorium and regional mask bylaw.

She was heavily criticized for voting against the bylaw which banned conversion therapy.

Lalonde claims this was a big misunderstanding as she believed the bylaw made it illegal for the practice to be carried out in the open but not privately.

“That was where I had the problem with the bylaw and that is why I asked the questions I asked. Conversion therapy, it’s not acceptable. ”

At this time, Lalonde is the only person to have put their name forward for Ward 3.

A complete list of candidates for Mayor and the other three Wards can be found on the RMWB’s website.

The election is scheduled for October 18, 2021.
