Fort McMurray Marathon Returning In September In Unique Fashion

The Fort McMurray Marathon is returning later this summer.

After being canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizing committee has decided to hold a hybrid event.

Runners will get the chance to take part virtually or in-person.

“This change is similar to many other Canadian marathons, which have also moved to a hybrid format to provide runners with options for participation and ensure their needs and comfort levels are met, while still providing the opportunity to enjoy the marathon experience and push for personal achievement goals,” said Alexis Tallon, Chair of the Fort McMurray Marathon Organizing Committee.

Those who take part in-person will be able to run the full marathon, half marathon, 10k, 5k and 3k distances on September 26. A Kids Fun Run will also be held on this day.

Those who want to take part virtually will be able to participate any day between September 11-24.

“While the 2021 Fort McMurray Marathon experience might be different from past years, it honours the history and legacy of a local race that has continued to grow and push for improvement, much like the many participants who have embraced the event on an annual basis,” added Tallon.

Registration for the marathon will open on June 18.
