Fort McMurray Giants Sitting Out 2021 Season

The Fort McMurray Giants will be sitting out the 2021 season.

Western Canadian Baseball League announced its official schedule on Monday for the five teams who will play this year: the Edmonton Prospects, Lethbridge Bulls, Okotoks Dawgs Black, Okotoks Dawgs Red, and the expansion Sylvan Lake Gulls.

Back in late 2020, the WCBL released its first schedule for the year with the Giants set to host Edmonton Prospects in May.

The third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to create a new one as teams decided to skip the season, which included the Giants.

A spokesperson for the WCBL noted, specifically for the Giants, the community’s isolation brought up a lot of issues.

This will be the second straight season the team will miss.

In an email sent to Mix News, Giants’ owner and president Dutche Iannetti says they’re ‘looking forward to the 2022 season.’

Despite many teams sitting out, the WCBL is excited to have some teams play baseball this year.

“We are so excited to be taking this next step in bringing baseball back to our fans,” says Kevin Kvame, president of the league. “Our governors have been working around the clock to get the schedule put together.”

Opening Day is slated for June 18.
