Ninth Person Dies From COVID In Fort McMurray, Region’s Active Case Count Drops Under 700

COVID-19 is claiming the life of another individual in Fort McMurray.

The province announced on Friday seven additional deaths from the virus across Alberta – one of which lived in the community.

This is the ninth death related to COVID-19 in Fort McMurray and the RMWB.

According to the province, three individuals with ties to Centre Of Hope, Suncor, and the Wapasu Creek Lodge have recently passed away, however, they didn’t release whether they live in the region.

The active total of COVID-19 cases is continuing to drop in Fort McMurray.

The province also announced on Friday 512 new cases over the past 24-hours.

There are currently 8,760 active cases across Alberta, while there have been a total of 226,449 positive tests.

There are also 517 Albertans in the hospital for the virus, 147 of which are in ICUs.

Locally, Fort McMurray added 26 new cases and 84 recoveries in the past 24 hours which lowers the active total to 672.

The rural areas added three new cases and eight recoveries, with the total of active cases now sitting at 24.

In total, 6,066 individuals across the RMWB – 5,794 in Fort McMurray and 272 in the rural areas – have recovered.

They are among the 214,966 who’ve recovered across the province. This represents over 94 per cent of reported cases.

Vaccination Update

Over 44 per cent of eligible residents in Fort McMurray and over 31 per cent in the rural areas have gotten at least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Right now, those born in 2009 or earlier can book an appointment at MacDonald Island Park or participating healthcare facilities.

  • 75+: 495 people (67 per cent)
  • 60-74: 4,640 people (67 per cent)
  • 40-59: 14,547 people (63 per cent)
  • 20-39: 12,553 people (44 per cent)
  • 12-19: 3,043 people (44 per cent) *previous provincial reports had the number around 60 per cent

This is the current breakdown for who’s gotten the vaccine in the rural areas:

  • 75+: 61 people (58 per cent)
  • 60-74: 277 people (54 per cent)
  • 40-59: 533 people (45 per cent)
  • 20-39: 306 people (26 per cent)
  • 12-19: 104 people (22 per cent) *previous provincial reports had the number around 25 per cent
