MOB Make Tough Decision To Cancel Season As COVID-19 Totals Rise Across Region

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are canceling their season early due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The region is currently being hit hard by the virus, sitting at the top of the list for spread of the virus in Alberta.

David Fitzgerald, President of the Fort McMurray Oil Barons, says the state of local emergency was the last straw.

“This was a difficult choice, but one we felt was necessary to maintain the health and safety of our organization and community.”

“With case numbers in our community among the highest per capita in Alberta, we feel strongly that this is the best decision – even though it goes against our competitive nature.”

The MOB were sitting top of the North Divison with a record of 12-1-3.

They had the third-best winning percentage in the AJHL, trailing only the Brooks Bandits and Okotoks Oilers.

However, arguably the biggest positive from the season was the fact none of the players, staff, or billet families tested positive for the virus.

“I would like to thank our billet families for welcoming our players into your homes without question and to our loyal supporters and sponsors for your continuous support,” added Fitzgerald.

“Good luck to all remaining AJHL teams who are still competing in games during the final weeks of the season. Stay safe and healthy – we will see you on the ice next season.”
