Suncor Contractor Dies From COVID-19 Complications

A contractor for Suncor Energy has passed away from COVID-19 complications.

The individual was an employee of GardaWorld, serving as a security guard at the oil company’s base plant since 2019.

Garda notes they ended up passing away at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre.

“GardaWorld extends its deepest condolences to the family and love ones of our colleague,” read a statement from the company.

It’s unclear whether this individual was a resident of the region.

If their home address was in a different community, they would be counted in that area’s COVID-19 totals.

However, an additional death was added to Fort McMurray’s total on the provincial COVID-19 map on Tuesday.

The Athabasca Tribal Council has also claimed an elder recently passed away which could account for the death.

The province has said there could be delays when updating case and death numbers.

Right now, five deaths have been reported in the RMWB, all being Fort McMurray residents.

-CORRECTION: An earlier version stated the individual was treated at Suncor’s Base Plant, however, this did not happen.
