Season Cut Short For Fort Chipewyan Winter Road

The Fort Chipewyan Winter Road is closing for the season.

Starting March 23 at 12 p.m. the road will be off-limits to the public as the ice and snow continue to melt due to the warmer weather.

The public is being reminded that using the road afterward is extremely dangerous as crews will no longer be monitoring the safety of the route.

If you do need to use the road before Tuesday’s deadline, 4×4 vehicles are recommended as the sandhills are soft and filled with potholes and ruts.

Until then, the load limit is 5,000 kg, for all vehicles going north and vehicles weighing 40,000 kg going south can use the road from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m.
