Suncor Energy and Wood Buffalo RCMP have recovered the body of a worker who fell into a tailings pond.

Around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, a dozer went through the ice of an inactive tailings pond with the individual dying as a result

He’s since been identified as 25-year-old New Brunswick resident Patrick Poitras.

Suncor confirmed they were able to recover his body late Friday night.

“Patrick will forever remain in our thoughts. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and co-workers,” the company said in a statement.

Suncor added it took several days to recover him as the incident took place in an area that was hard to reach.
