The active total of COVID-19 cases is rising in Fort McMurray.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, announced on Tuesday 1,021 new cases across the province.

This raises the provincial total to 92,480 with 18,311 currently active. There are also 802 Albertans in the hospital for the virus, 152 of which are in ICUs.

Locally, Fort McMurray added 25 new cases and 16 additional recoveries which raises the active total to 204.

The rural areas had a previously recovered case taken away while one new case was reported, putting the total of active cases at seven.

In total, 1,057 individuals across the RMWB – 948 in Fort McMurray and 109 in the rural areas – have recovered.

They are among the 73,298 who’ve recovered across the province. This represents over 79 per cent of reported cases.

There were also 11 new deaths from COVID-19 in Alberta over the past day – raising the total to 871.

To date, two individuals in Fort McMurray have died as a result of the virus.

Meanwhile, the province is temporarily changing the social gathering restrictions over the holidays for those who live alone.

From December 23 to December 28, households can invite up to two single Albertans for a ‘one-time visit.’

Also, Fort McMurray is set to receive 975 doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

The province recently received over 25,000 doses with Calgary, Edmonton, and Red Deer getting over 60 per cent of the shots.

Fort McMurray, Brooks, Camrose, Drumheller, Edson, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Pincher Creek, and St. Paul will split the remaining 9,750.

So far, over 3,000 health-care workers have received their first shots.
