Fort McMurray and the rural areas are once again seeing the total of active COVID-19 cases drop.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, announced on Wednesday 1,270 new cases across the province.

This raises the provincial total to 84,597 with 20,169 currently active. There are also 749 Albertans in the hospital for the virus, 139 of which are in ICUs.

Locally, Fort McMurray added 17 new cases and 22 additional recoveries which lowers the active total to 219.

The rural areas added two more recoveries which puts the total of active cases at six.

In total, 950 individuals across the RMWB – 841 in Fort McMurray and 109 in the rural areas – have recovered.

They are among the 63,668 who’ve recovered across the province. This represents over 75 per cent of reported cases.

There were also 16 new deaths from COVID-19 in Alberta over the past day – raising the total to 760.

To date, two individuals in Fort McMurray have died as a result of the virus.

School Update

Six individuals at six different schools have tested positive for COVID-19 over the past three days.

These cases have ties to Christina Gordon, Westwood, École Dickinsfield, Walter and Gladys Hill, Fort McMurray Christian School, and Sister Mary Phillips.

All schools are remaining open at this time.

Alberta Health Services has been in contact with all staff and students who need to self-isolate.
