RCMP Link Fort McMurray Man To Multiple Thefts Since July

Wood Buffalo RCMP are arresting a 27-year-old man in connection to multiple thefts over the past several months.

Derek Marcel Cooper was arrested on December 2 after the Mounties linked multiple files to the same perpetrator.

The police note Cooper allegedly stole three vehicles in Eagle Ridge and downtown from July to September. Each was discovered unoccupied shortly later.

They also believe he broke into multiple vehicles in Abasand and downtown in September and October. This includes being tied to a vandalism spree at a parkade on King Street.

The RCMP also claim Cooper stole a donation box from an unnamed charity organization and several items from a business in Beacon Hill back in September.

They were reportedly able to link him to the crimes through surveillance footage, statements, and fingerprints gathered during each investigation.

Cooper has since been charged with two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and one count of stolen property under $5,000, two counts of theft under $5,000, breaking and entering, two counts of misuse of a credit card, six counts of mischief under $5,000 and one count over $5,000, as well as five counts of failing to comply and one count of failing to appear.

He remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear in a Fort McMurray courtroom on December 14.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact RCMP at 780-788-4040 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
