Suncor’s plan to take over operatorship at Syncrude will result in layoffs.

That’s according to both companies who spoke about the move on Fort McMurray Matters.

The oil company announced on Monday they reached an agreement with fellow co-owners of the joint venture to take over operations by the end of 2021.

Mike MacSween, Suncor’s Executive Vice President – Upstream tells Mix News there will be cuts in the workforce down the road.

“The reductions are going to get achieved through a combination of things – attrition, redeployment, and layoffs will ultimately come into play at some juncture.”

An exact number or timing on when the layoffs will happen is not known at this time.

“We will certainly be working really hard to keep employees in both organizations informed on the impacts as we work together on this formal transition plan,” added Doreen Cole, Syncrude’s Managing Director.

Suncor has already announced they would be reducing its overall workforce by 10 to 15 per cent in the next 12 to 18 months.
