Region Adds Around 700 Jobs in October, Fourth Straight Month With Increase in Positions

The region is seeing an increase in jobs for the fourth straight month.

According to Statistics Canada’s October report, Wood Buffalo – Cold Lake added around 700 positions.

This comes after adding 1,200 spots in September, 1,000 positions in August, and 1,300 jobs in July.

The transportation and warehousing sector saw the biggest increase last month, adding 300 spots.

The forestry, fishing, mining, quarrying, oil, and gas sector was tied for the biggest decrease, around 200 positions, with the public administration sector.

Meanwhile, the local unemployment rate continues to drop – currently sitting at 9.9 per cent. This is the first time the region’s rate has been under 10 per cent since May.

The provincial and federal unemployment rates also both dropped to 10.7 per cent and 8.9 per cent respectively.
