Local Suicide Survivor Using Social Media To Help Others Struggling With Mental Health

A Fort McMurray teen is looking to help others struggling with their mental health after surviving a suicide attempt.

Naomi Solbak, a 17-year-old student at cole McTavish, tried to take her own life last August after experiencing a low too many people unfortunately reached.

She had previously been diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and borderline personality disorder (BPD) and mixed in with her current emotional struggles, she decided to end it all.

“I actually ended up being resuscitated,” Solbak said.

Despite surviving, the following months continued to see many lows. Along with the added toll from the COVID-19 pandemic, Solbak suffered from a severe OCD attack which nearly caused her to relapse.

Instead of craving, Solbak decided to take a stand and fight back.

One of her steps was creating a Tik Tok account where she shared her story publicly for the first time.

“I just felt this urge that I needed to tell my story and I’ve had multiple people tell me your story’s going to change the world but within myself, I realized too I needed to get rid of all the lies and secrets I’ve been holding and let it all free.”

In just a couple of months, she’s amassed over 4,600 followers.

Along with telling her story, Solbak has also started providing tips and answering questions from those who find themselves in the same boat.

“I’ve gotten many messages saying I’ve saved someone’s life from suicide and my heart always drops when that happens.”

Solbak’s recovery has also gained the attention of ‘Love What Matters‘ an organization that highlights stories of empowerment, inspiration, and more.

They currently have millions of followers across different social media platforms. To Solbak, this is a chance to reach somebody who’s in need of help.

“I thought, when I first began, even if I can help one person that’s all that I care about.”
