COVID-19 Outbreak Declared at Suncor’s Base Plant

A COVID-19 outbreak is being declared at Suncor’s Base Plant.

A company spokesperson says five contractors have tested positive for the virus since August 22.

All five are now self-isolating off-site.

Suncor believes there’s no connection between the five workers, however, it’s unknown whether they had contracted COVID-19 while on-site.

They also note early information gathered suggests their exposure was limited.

Those who’ve been in contact will be contacted by Alberta Health Services and will need to self-isolate and be tested.

Meanwhile, Syncrude is also dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak at their site as 11 individuals have tested positive.

This marks the fifth outbreak to be declared in the oilsands.

Imperial Oil’s Kearl Lake had the biggest with 114 individuals testing positive, while Canadian Natural Resources saw five individuals test positive at their Albian and Horizon sites.
