Six Syncrude Employees Test Positive For COVID-19

Six individuals working at Syncrude, north of Fort McMurray, have tested positive for COVID-19.

The oil company is currently working with Alberta Health Services to conduct contact tracing for all potential close contacts.

Syncrude Spokesperson Will Gibson tells Mix News they believe each got the virus off-site.

“All the information today suggests the transmission didn’t take place at the workplace.”

Operations on-site are continuing as normal. Employees and contractors are being reminded to continue following all COVID-19 measures to help limit the potential spread of the virus.

Gibson says the risk is low if all individuals follow these protocols.

“We expect our employees to follow recommended and mandated measures such as physical distancing in the workplace, mandatory mask usage while you’re moving, on commuter buses, and shift buses on site.”

Back in April, an employee and contractor also contracted COVID-19.
