Keyano Anticipating Close To Same Enrollment From Last School Year

Keyano College is anticipating to have close to the same enrollment as last year.

The post-secondary school has received nearly the same amount of applications, however, they didn’t specify the exact number as these individuals still need to go through the process before becoming an official student.

So far, around 100 individuals have been approved to live in their student housing.

Fred Russell, Vice President of Academic, tells Mix News at-school-living will be a little different for these students.

“We’re putting fewer people in pods, we’re making arrangements for transportation from the airport for those who’re flying in, we’re making sure we have isolation for those who have to travel to be here and creating an environment where if somebody does contract COVID that we’re in a position to support them.”

The school also continues to recover from April’s flood and deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

They’re currently in the process of putting up signs and making sure protocols are in place for a potential outbreak or emergency situation.

Keyano, like other provincial universities and colleges, is providing a mix of in-person and online teaching.

“If it can be lectured based it will be online and then, of course, we will have labs and things of that nature… and those labs and shops will have the safety protocols in place that are required,” added Russell.

Face-to-face encounters will also be replaced with online services to limit the spread of the virus.

“We’ve really done the full meal deal in terms of transitioning online, it’s not just how you study it’s also how you get services that are available at the college.”

Keyano recently reopened several buildings ahead of the upcoming school year that had been damaged by the floodwaters.

The Bob Lamb Building and Riedel Housing continue to be closed off as repair work continues. To account for this, the industrial campus in Gregoire will be heavily used this school year.

The 2020-21 school year gets underway on September 1.
