Vista Ridge Hoping To Open 12-Hole Golf Course in August

Another golf course is planning to open in Fort McMurray next month.

Vista Ridge is opening a 12-hole golf course aimed at providing a space for families and those trying to learn the sport.

General Manager Dan Wilson tells Mix News they’re hoping this will encourage more people to think of golf as a new activity to try.

“We looking to get more families out and maybe get beginners out on the golf course that might be a little bit intimidated, a little nervous to go towards a bigger course.”

The course will have six par 3’s, five par 4’s, and one par 5.

There aren’t any bunkers and the holes are extra-large to help people with their putting.

Wilson says even though this is a beginner’s course, veteran players should still be able to enjoy it.

“There are some shorter par 4’s – maybe an avid golfer will drive the green in one shot or they can work on their short game.”

Plans for the course have been in the works for over a decade, with the official groundbreaking taking place in 2017.

Along with the 12-holes, Vista Ridge is also opening an aquatic driving range.

“Usually when you’re golfing you’re trying to avoid the water but, on our aqua range, you’ll be aiming for it,” added Wilson.

After not being allowed to pump water back into the river systems, they decided to turn the big body of water into a driving range while also using it as an irrigation reservoir.

An exact date for their opening hasn’t been decided, however, Vista Ridge is hoping to have the first tee shots happen sometime in August.

Meanwhile, this would be the fourth golf course in the community joining Miskanaw, the Fort McMurray Golf Club, and Rotary Links Golf Course.
