A Fort McMurray man has been sentenced to five and a half years for his role in a botched robbery that ended in the death of another man.

Nathan Gordey was given his sentence on Friday after pleading guilty to breaking and entering and forcible confinement with a firearm.

According to the Statement of Facts, Gordey, Brandon Stevens, and Brent Goodridge broke into a home in an attempt to take 10 puppies which they believed were being mistreated. Their plan was to provide them to an ex-girlfriend of one of the residents.

Stevens and the puppies’ owner were known to each other due to a conflict with a former girlfriend.

After the three broke into the home, they forced two residents inside a bathroom.

They then went upstairs where Stevens was shot by a third member of the household, later dying from his injuries.

Goodridge and Gordey ended up leaving the home with the puppies before being arrested four days later.

Back in May, Goodridge was sentenced to four years for manslaughter.

Gordey was also charged with manslaughter but that charge was dropped. He also pled guilty to witness tampering before this sentencing after trying to influence two potential witnesses.

One of the three individuals who was in the residence also provided a victim impact statement noting the event has caused them to suffer from PTSD.

They added they haven’t been able to work after developing depression and anxiety shortly after the shooting.

Before being sentenced, an emotional Gordey spoke to the court where he owned up to his role in the robbery.

“I want to sincerley apologize to the Stevens’ family. I’m not here to give an excuse.”

Gordey was also credited with serving two years meaning he will have to serve another three and a half years in prison. He was also handed down a lifetime firearm ban.
