Fort McKay is dealing with its first case of COVID-19.

The Fort McKay Metis Nation and Fort McKay First Nation announced on Friday they’ve received confirmation an individual has contracted the virus.

It’s believed this is a new case that hasn’t been added to the Wood Buffalo area map.

As of Friday, there are 13 other cases active in the rural areas.

The location of these individuals is currently not known.

As for the individual in Fort McKay, they are currently in self-isolation.

Those who’ve been in contact are being tested.

The community is also moving to stage 2 of their COVID-19 restrictions.

This includes encouraging residents to only leave their homes for essential needs and continuing to restrict access into the community for those who don’t live in the area and aren’t deemed an essential service.
