Eleven Wildfires in Fort McMurray Forest Area Started By Human Activity

Over two-thirds of the wildfires in the Fort McMurray Forest Area this year have been human caused.

Since March 1, the start of the wildfire season, there have been 15 fires that have burned 189 hectares.

Two fires remain active around Fort Chipewyan, however, they are currently being held.

Eleven were caused by human activity including five related to recreation activities including not extinguishing campfires.

Those who choose to go camping and start a campfire must ensure they fully extinguish their fire pit before leaving the area.

Meanwhile, those who use an off-highway-vehicle must keep an eye on their exhaust to ensure debris doesn’t catch on fire.
