Memoir About Horse River Wildfire Finalist For Alberta Book Publishing Award

A book about the Horse River wildfire is being named a finalist for a provincial award.

Therese Greenwood’s ‘What You Take With You: Wildfire, Family and the Road Home’ is one of four books nominated for the Trade Non-Fiction award in the 2020 Alberta Book Publishing Awards.

The memoir tells the story of the evacuation through Greenwood’s eyes and how she was able to cope with the aftermath.

“The way people across Alberta rallied to support Fort McMurray evacuees during a time of crisis is a big part of the story,” she said, in a release.

Greenwood has also been helping others share their experience through pen and paper. She previously held workshops for those who wanted to write about the fire.

“It’s an honour for the book to be nominated for a province-wide award by the [Book Publishers Association of Alberta],” she added.

The other three books nominated for the award focus on a bicycle trip down the North American West Coast, the Edmonton Oiler’s new arena, and the importance of plants.

The winners of the 2020 Alberta Book Publishing Awards will be announced through a virtual gala. More details about the event are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
