Pride Flag Raised in Wood Buffalo for Pride Week

The Pride Flag was raised at the municipal buildings this morning and will stay up for a week.

This is the second year Wood Buffalo has flown the flag.

The event included a proclamation from Mayor Don Scott and speeches from community members.

Scott officially declared June 13 to 20th 2020 Pride Week in the RMWB.

This years flag includes a black and brown stripe in the rainbow. These additional colours signify the extra struggles that black, indigenous and people of colour face in the LGBTQ+ community.

“We’re really grateful for the support we have received here in Fort McMurray” said Mitchel Bowers, Chair of Pride YMM

Events will be held throughout the week to celebrate Pride in the region, including a virtual vigil for those who have lost their lives to homophobia and transphobia, as well as a Alberta wide queer prom and a Show Your Pride Contest.
