Patients nearing the end of their lives at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre will now have a more exclusive area for them and their families.

Construction on the $1.68 million Jeremy Snook Memorial Palliative Suites is officially complete.

These three suites will be an upgrade on the rooms previously offered. They all feature a patient room, a family room where people can stay overnight, and a shared bathroom. A secure family lounge has also been created to allow for a quiet refuge.

NLHF Executive Director Cindy Amerongen tells Mix News it’s exciting to see that all the money raised and donated has turned into something special.

“The level of care they were hoping for is going to be here and those spaces as designed by patients and by families and by palliative staff are going to be functional and exactly what they were looking for.”

The suites are named after 19-year-old Jeremy Snook who passed away from cancer in 2013.

His parents, Brian and Gail, helped raise around $330,000 through different auctions and fundraisers.

Amerongen says this project wouldn’t have been possible without all their support.

“They’ve actually been really generous with their time, going through with project managers and even looking at choices of furniture and how the colour scheme is and how does it feel.”

This is one of several included in the NLHF’s $16 million Gratitude Campaign.

Some have also been finished including rural clinics in Anzac and Conklin, while the costliest project, the minimally invasive surgical suites, has yet to have construction start.

The funds for all the projects has been raised.
