The federal government is allocating an additional $75 million to Indigenous organizations to help with the pandemic.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced an expansion to the Indigenous Community Support Fund on Thursday which was originally created in March with an initial $15 million.

These funds will be distributed to Indigenous organizations who address the critical needs of the more than one million people who live off-reserve or in a city for services that are culturally appropriate.

“COVID-19 is having unique impacts on First Nations, Inuit, and Mtis across our country,” said Trudeau.

“For Indigenous peoples living off reserve, in urban centres, or separated from their communities, it can be even more challenging to access the help they need.”

So far, the support has been used to help with meals, groceries, clothing and supplies to those in need.

Personal protective equipment, and mental health counselling has also been offered for those living off reserve and in urban areas.
