Higher Local Gas Prices Result of Lower Demand, Longer Travel Distance

Lower demand and longer distancing are the main reasons for higher gas prices in Fort McMurray compared to other communities.

The RMWB held a virtual town meeting on Thursday where they answered questions from the public regarding COVID-19.

Concerns over gas prices were brought up by one resident as they’ve been lowered across the province much more in other cities since the pandemic started.

Mayor Don Scott relayed a message from the provincial government which noted smaller remote areas will usually see higher prices.

According to Gasbuddy, as of Thursday evening, local stations were offering gas between 82.3 cents and 87.9 cents per litre.

In Calgary, the lowest prices were at 59.9 cents per litre, while in Edmonton they were sitting around 54.9 cents per litre.
