Keyano Temporarily Laying Off 74 Employees Due To COVID-19 Pandemic

Keyano College is temporarily laying off 74 employees due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement sent to Mix News, the school says this unprecedented time is creating multiple challenges that they must find solutions for.

This includes closing down buildings, moving classes online, and the cancellation of multiple events.

“These have been made while minimizing the impact on core educational programs and student services,” Keyano’s statement read.

The individuals were given their notice on Tuesday, April 14.

CUPE Communication Representative Lou Arab says 69 of the employees are CUPE members. Their positions included administrative staff, instructor aides, and student support services.

Back in February, Keyano also laid off 19 staff members.

In an email obtained by Mix News at the time, the college claimed the economy was the main reason for these job losses.

President and CEO Trent Keough noted future layoffs were also a possibility.
