“Our Commitment To This Community Is Unwavering” Suncor, Syncrude Expressing Support for Wood Buffalo During COVID-19 Pandemic

Suncor and Syncrude are expressing their support for Wood Buffalo as economic uncertainty and the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

The two oil companies released a joint letter on Friday looking to ease the tension and anxiety across the RMWB.

They note they’re committed to ensuring business continues with their local partners and past commitments to non-profits are honoured.

“Our region has a proud history of people supporting each other through difficult circumstances,” the letter read.

“Today is no different and we remain confident the Wood Buffalo community will continue to be united in meeting the challenges of this unprecedented time.”

Both companies have reduced their 2020 budget. In Suncor’s case, they’ve lowered capital spending by $1.5 billion.

“By working together we can effectively manage today’s crisis while forging a path to a strong future for Wood Buffalo.”

Meanwhile, Suncor and Syncrude are outlining measures being taken at their sites to protect their employees from the virus.

This includes limiting their on-site workforce to only essential positions. Over 50 per cent of staff are currently working remotely from home.

“We’re following and expect our employees to follow recommended and mandated government measures such as keeping workers at physical distances in the workplace and on commuter buses,
implemented health screening, and enhanced workplace hygiene and cleaning,” the letter added.

They’ve also canceled projects that would have brought in workers from outside of the province.
