A second case of COVID-19 is being confirmed in Fort McMurray.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, announced on Wednesday 61 new cases of the virus in the province. This brings the provincial total to 419.

One is in the community, however, no more information is available at this time. The other case is believed to be an employee at Maxx Dental.

There are now 23 confirmed cases in the north zone, which includes the RMWB.

The other cases are in High Prairie, Slave Lake, Barrhead, Bonnyville, Cold Lake, Grande Prairie, Jasper, Hinton, and Westlock.

Meanwhile, 24 people who’ve contracted the coronavirus are being treated in the hospital. Eight are in the intensive care unit.

Enforcement Measures

People who don’t follow the provincial measures against COVID-19 will now be fined.

Premier Jason Kenney announced that police across the province can now issue tickets to help limit the spread of the virus.

Fines can be as much as $1,000 and up to $100,000 for a serious offense. The amount could increase to $500,000 if someone commits a second serious offense.

“While the vast majority of Albertans are doing their part to flatten the curve by self-isolating, practicing physical distancing or helping those who are self-isolating, some are not,” said Kenney.

“Self-isolation orders are not suggestions or guidelines – they are now the law and they must be followed. Anyone putting their families, their neighbours, or other Albertans at risk will face consequences.”

People can receive tickets if they fail to self-isolate, visit a continuing care centre when not allowed, and take part in a mass gathering of over 50 people.
