Two Wildfires in Fort McMurray Forest Area Since Start of Wildfire Season

Despite there being snow on the ground, there have been two wildfires in the Fort McMurray Forest Area.

Alberta’s wildfire season officially got underway on March 1.

One of the fires has been completely extinguished while the other is currently under control.

Even with the fires, the wildfire danger level is currently low.

Alberta Wildfire is reminding people to be extra careful when out in the wooded areas to avoid starting any fires.

Over the past five years in the Fort McMurray area, human-caused fires accounted for 30 per cent of starts and 70 per cent of hectares burned.

Last year, 36 per cent of fires were caused by human activity.
