The Fort McMurray SPCA is in desperate need of donations for their pet food bank.

The non-profit has seen a rise in families asking for supplies over the first three months of the year.

They’re hoping to get a healthy supply of items to continue supporting pet owners during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As the region’s only animal shelter we are hoping the community can help us fill our pet food bank as soon as possible so that we can be there for animals and their families during this time,” said Selena MacIssac, FMSPCA Operations Manager.

In 2019, over 6,500 kg of food was handed out through the pet food bank.

In order to potentially increase donations, the SPCA will be accepting items at their facility seven days a week from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. A donation box is set up in front of their building on MacAlpine Crescent.

“Residents are provided with pet food for their companion animals in order to assist them in caring for their pets so that families can stay together during times of economic hardship, medical emergency or crisis,” added MacIsaac.

Meanwhile, the SPCA says they are continuing to provide their key services such as their in-shelter animal care, pet adoption by appointment, and the Animal Safe Haven program for pets of residents fleeing domestic violence.

However, multiple fundraisers have been cancelled with the non-profit also in need of funds.
