The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Alberta is doubling.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, announced on Tuesday there are now 14 people who have contracted the illness.

The seven knew cases include four from the Calgary area and three from the Edmonton area.

Each is currently at home self isolating, however, one is in hospital due to a pre-existing chronic condition.

“While new cases are always concerning, Albertans should know that increases are expected as we work aggressively to limit the virus’s spread,” said Hinshaw.

“We are all in this together. Every one of us has a role to play in protecting our families, friends and fellow Canadians. The precautionary measures you take now will help shield yourself and others, especially seniors and people with pre-existing medical conditions, from this virus.”

Moving forward, everyone needs to adopt good hygiene practices. This includes washing your hands regularly, covering up when coughing or sneezing, and using your elbows to ‘shake hands.’ People should also avoid touching their face.

All 14 cases are believed to be travel related.

People who are coming back to the country should monitor their health for at least two weeks.

If you start developing any symptoms, self-isolate yourself at home and call 8-1-1. The municipality is currently in talks with Alberta Health Services to set up designated assessment centres for people to get tested in a safe environment away from others.
