Federal Agency Looking For Public Input on Proposed Suncor Extension Project

You’re getting a chance to share your thoughts on a proposed project north of Fort McMurray.

The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada is looking for public and Indigenous feedback on Suncor Energy’s Base Mine extension project.

The site would be around 3 km north of the community and would continue the supply of bitumen at their Base Plant. It would include an open-pit mine and associated infrastructure.

If approved, construction on the 20,000 hectares extension would start in 2026.

The Agency will be collecting written comments from the public until March 23, 2020.

Afterward, the IAAC will review all the feedback before deciding whether a federal impact assessment is needed for the project. If so, the public will again be allowed to share their opinion.

Meanwhile, Suncor recently got approval by the government of Alberta for its Meadow Creek West project.

The site would produce around 40,000 barrels per day while creating around 3,400 jobs through construction and operations.
