Badminton Olympic Qualifier Being Held in Fort McMurray

An international badminton tournament is coming to Wood Buffalo.

Badminton Canada will be hosting the YONEX Canadian International Challenge 2020 at MacDonald Island Park from March 31 to April 5.

Players from across the world will be vying to earn points through the tournament to help them clinch a birth in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Qualifying ends for the Olympics on April 26.

“We’re excited to welcome hundreds of the world’s top badminton players, delegates and
coaches to our region,” said Mayor Don Scott, in a release.

“As hosts of the YONEX Canadian International Challenge, we have an opportunity to showcase our region and world-class facilities and to cheer on Canada’s best badminton athletes as they pursue their dreams of Olympic qualification.”

Around 200 players will be a part of the tournament which marks the biggest international sporting event held in Fort McMurray.

The event is free for fans to watch.
