Free Indigenous Football Camp Being Offered in Fort McMurray

Indigenous youth from across the RMWB are getting a chance to take part in a free football camp.

Northern Elite is hosting its second annual Indigenous Camp this upcoming weekend.

Along with learning more about football, multiple guest speakers will be on hand to discuss everything from the sport to life in general.

Co-Organizer Kwame Osei tells Mix News they’re hoping to inspire these kids to do great things.

“It’s not just a football camp it’s more about getting these kids active, helping them bond and create social awareness, social health, social wellbeing.”

Former NFL player Levi Horn and Season 6 winner of The Amazing Race Canada Adam Kovacs are just a couple of the guests scheduled to speak.

Meanwhile, Northern Elite has held several camps over the years.

Local football stars Lamar Goods, Luke Foster, and Tola Banjoko have all attended previous camps.

Last year, they decided to hold a camp specifically for Indigenous youth as they felt many were getting left behind.

“We’re seeing the numbers out on the reserve and we’re seeing the numbers that came and it didn’t really reflect – we knew there were a lot of kids who weren’t getting reached,” said Dylan Elias, Co-Organizer.

The Football Camp takes place Friday and Saturday at MacDonald Island Park.

Kids interested can still sign up for free.
