Consultation Process Between Industry and Indigenous Groups Being Updated

The provincial government is looking to improve the consultation process between industry and Indigenous groups.

The GoA is allowing the Aboriginal Consultation Office to update the guide industry follows when a potential project could impact Indigenous rights or culture.

“We heard from industry that they wanted to take steps to improve the consultation process,” said Rick Wilson, Minister of Indigenous Relations, in a release.

“This new guide not only responds to what industry told us, it benefits First Nations and Metis Settlements.”

Some of the changes include a more organized consultation timeline, packaging multiple applications together to reduce time, and sending out a notification letter with details to every potentially impacted group.

The idea of the updated guide is to help industry become more prepared to address concerns related to their project.
