It looks like freezing temperatures are here to stay.

Environment Canada issued an extreme cold warning on Saturday that remains in effect through the RMWB and surrounding areas.

The weather agency notes the cold is being caused by an arctic air mass that descended on Alberta over the weekend.

Meteorologist Daniel Brown tells Mix News we can expect this pattern to continue for the foreseeable future.

“We issue the extreme cold warning when the temperature goes below minus 40. If it warms up during the day but it’s cooler at night, we’ll leave it issued. The issue right now is more the wind and temperature.”

Brown advises dressing in layers to avoid hypothermia or frostbite.

He notes we should see the windy conditions die down by week’s end.

“The wind is the main issue over the next day or so, the temperatures will be in the low minus 20, minus 30, but then the temperatures are expected to be colder next week with a lot less wind.”
