Two Local Firefighters Helping Fight Australian Bush Fires

Many Canadian firefighters are in Australia helping fight the massive bush fires – including some from Wood Buffalo.

One local firefighter is currently there while another is on route to arrive tomorrow. Both work for Alberta Wildfire.

In total, 95 Canadians are in Australia with 34 coming from Alberta.

The fires have led to the deaths of dozens of Australians, and over a half-billion of the country’s wildlife population.

The fires have also grabbed the attention of Ben Annetts, a Fort McMurray man who is originally from outside of Sydney, who has started a GoFundMe page to help raise funds.

He tells Mix News after losing his home during the Horse River wildfire – he knew he had to try and assist in whatever way possible.

“It’s a big deal, it’s something no one wants to deal with in their life. That’s why we’re trying to help out and just raise whatever funds we can.”

As of Monday morning, the fundraiser has peaked over $13,000.
