Weekend Sweeps Send Keyano Basketball Teams Into Break On Winning Note

The Keyano Huskies men’s basketball team ride into their holiday break on an 11-game win streak.

The Huskies pulled off another weekend sweep, topping Kings University on Friday 74-65 before besting them on Saturday by a score of 98-68.

Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga tells Mix News it was a weekend of perseverance for his team.

“We were down on Friday with five minutes left but the guys stuck together. We got stops when we needed to and we made some pretty good plays down the stretch. Not every game when you play 24 in a season is going to be easy and I just thought we did a good job of doing whatever it took to win.”

Friday was a quiet offensive showing for the Huskies, who scored a season-low 74 points on route to the victory, lead by Dejon Davis’s 20 points.

Saturday saw the offence rejuvenate with Angel Mbituyimana scoring 27 off the bench, followed by Stefan Jovic’s 21 points.

Wielenga says this win streak has been a pretty good run for his boys.

“In my time, it’s definitely the longest winning streak we’ve had. It’s been a fun run to be apart of and I know the guys are tired when you incorporate exhibition and everything – it’s been a long four months. But we’re very excited to close out the semester on a winning note.”

The Huskies ranked 10th in Canada, according to the latest CCAA rankings – heading into the holiday break.

Women’s Team Extends Win Streak To Six

The Keyano Huskies women’s basketball team head into the holiday break after wrapping up a sixth straight win.

The Huskies managed another weekend sweep against Kings University, topping them 74-62 on Friday before besting them by a score of 76-65 on Saturday.

Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance tells Mix News it’s a solid wrap up to a great first half to the season.

“It was a great way to end the first half. The girls played well in both games. I think we finished where we set our sets to and now, we have a good three and a half weeks of rest for them to focus on school and get back it starting in the new year.”

Moiyan Toure had a monster game on Friday, posting 21 points and 14 rebounds in the win for Keyano.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Aaliyah Johnson continued her strong season with 26 points, while Toure added another double-double with 13 points and 11 boards.

With six straight wins under their belt, Vigilance says it’s been a culmination of all their hard work.

“It just really re-emphasizes all the things we’ve talked about and worked towards these last three months. It’s a good stepping stone and it’s always great to finish on a winning note heading into Christmas and hopefully, we can use that as momentum going into the second half.”

The Huskies enter the break tied for 1st in the ACAC North, with a record of 10-2.
