Fort Chipewyan Winter Road Potentially Set To Open in Coming Weeks

The Fort Chipewyan Winter Road is getting close to opening for the season.

The municipality says the road is tentatively scheduled to open on December 15.

This all depends on the weather and if crews have been able to ensure the road is safe and accessible.

It’s expected light traffic of 5,000 kg or lower will be the only ones allowed on the road in the early portion.

Load limits will rise throughout the winter based on the weather and maintenance work being done.

Meanwhile, the RMWB is reminding motorist to avoid using the route before it opens as it can potentially put you and others at risk of a serious incident.

There are no regular services on the road such as gas stations and cell phone coverage.

More information can be found on the RMWB’s website.
