Husky Basketball Squads Pull Off Weekend Sweep Over NAIT

The Keyano Huskies men’s basketball team have won seven straight games.

The Huskies flexed their muscles with a weekend sweep over visiting NAIT – starting with Friday’s 92-67 win, followed by Saturday’s 92-73 win.

The wins improve Keyano to 7-1 on the campaign.

Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga tells Mix News the boys went out and executed.

“We were focused on what we had to do to stop their two best players and make sure we were a defensive unit. They came into the weekend averaging 92 points a game and we held them to 67 and 73. So, I think the biggest thing was our defence and our energy.”

Stefan Jovcic lead Friday’s effort with 21 points, while Noah Horobetz-Simpson posted a double-double with 19 points and 13 boards.

Meanwhile, it was a more all-round effort on Saturday, with all five Huskies starters posting double-digit points – lead by Dejon Davis’s 17.

Wielenga since their disappointing home opener – the boys have been on fire.

“We’re 4-0 on the road. We’ve taken care of business at home since our first game and we just continue to get better at practice and guys have answered the challenge each week. It’s exciting we’ve built it up to seven in a row but we’re looking to make it eight this Friday.”

The Keyano Huskies Women’s basketball team had a nice bounce-back effort over the weekend.

Following a pair of losses at Lakeland two weeks ago – the Huskies bounced back with a pair of very convincing wins over visiting NAIT.

On Friday, Keyano won 59-38 – and on Saturday they notched a 70-53 win.

Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance tells Mix News it was good to see the team get back to winning.

“Very proud of the team to bounce back after two losses the way we did. Especially defensively. It shows that we’re growing and developing with every weekend. That’s all you can ask for as a coach.”

The wins improve Keyano to 6-2 on the campaign.

On Friday, Moiyan Toure had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards to lead the Huskies to victory.

Saturday saw Toure post another double-double with 11 points and 11 boards – while Aaliyah Johnson exploded for 24 points.

Vigilance says it was a great way to rebound after the losses to Lakeland.

“We outworked them, outran them, we played great defensively – those are things that we wanted to do better this weekend. In Lakeland we didn’t do those things. It shows from Friday to Saturday we played with consistency. I think we were the same team on Friday as we were Saturday and I think that’s a big plus.”
