The Fort McKay First Nation has extended an invite to Premier Jason Kenney regarding the Moose Lake Plan.

Last week, FMFN’s Chief Mel Grandjamb wrote a letter to the Premier – inviting him and other officials to join the community for the Moose Lake Together Summit in 2020.

The summit seeks to gain the government’s approval of the Plan so that industry, government and the community can get back to growing Alberta’s energy sector together.

Grandjamb tells Mix News this plan is all about responsible development.

“We hope to have the plan executed in good faith with the provincial government so that way we don’t sterilize development. We just want to make sure there are parameters in place so that the next project after Prosper has clear parameters and a clear working relationship with structure.”

The summit will also help ensure Indigenous voices are heard in support of responsible energy development.

Moose Lake is located 65 kilometres northwest of Fort McKay and the plan manages development by protecting the area’s ecological and cultural integrity.

Grandjamb says the hope is the summit will convince Kenney to approve the current draft of their plan.

“Bring government, the community, and industry together on how we’re going to develop this area. The reason for the Central Processing Facility, outside the 10-kilometre zone, is we just want to ensure that we don’t push away animals, damage plants or the good water we have up there.”
