Westwood Named Third Greenest School In Canada

A Fort McMurray school continues to be one of the more environmentally friendly across Canada.

Westwood Community High School was named the third greenest school by the Canada Green Building Council in September.

Last year, the school was ranked second across the country.

The CGCB notes they were impressed by Westwood’s two teaching greenhouses, featuring an irrigation system run on solar power and collected rain water.

The school also features compost provided by the school’s digester cone composters and produce from their ‘Farm to Table’ program.

Westwood has also started a new aquaponics project that aims to help students understand the impact of a living wall on air quality.

The Fort McMurray Public School Division recognized the school’s ranking at their monthly board meeting on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, W. D. Ferris Elementary in Richmond, British Columbia and the Career and Technology Center at Central Memorial High School in Calgary came first and second respectively.
