A former Korean War veteran is being honoured by the local Legion.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 165, along with the McMurray Mtis Local 1935, will be holding a Dedication Ceremony on Saturday in the Abasand Cemetery to recognize Canadian Military Veteran Leo MacDonald.

He will be receiving a new headstone which is being donated by ‘The Last Post Fund’ which provides funeral and memorial services for veterans who do not have marked graves.

Legion President Pat Duggan tells Mix News it’s important that they recognize everybody who served.

“We have to a make sure that we never forget at any point in time anyone’s service, we have to make sure that we properly honour those who sacrificed.”

MacDonald served in The Royal Highlanders of Canada, also know as the Black Watch, in South Korea in 1953.

Duggan says situations like this happen more often than people think.

“It depends on the circumstances of which a person passes away ultimately. You get some folks who pass away with no real means, so they will be berried in a cemetery but whatever city or municipality that happens to have control usually leaves a number marker to place the fact that somebody is there.”

He adds the Legion is expected to hold more ceremonies for other veterans in the coming months.

Meanwhile, MacDonald’s family is also expected to take part in the ceremony.

It gets underway on Saturday at 1 p.m.
