Safe Method For Transporting Crude Developed by Alberta Company

A new way of transporting bitumen has passed a big hurdle.

Melius Energy has developed a new shipping method, called BitCrude, that turns crude into a semi-solid material that is non-flammable, floats in water, and is non-toxic to marine life.

The Calgary-based company recently sent their first shipment from Edmonton to Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

“We have now proven that we can ship bitumen to international markets safely and efficiently,” said Nicole Zhang, Melius Energy President, in a release.

The semi-solid material would be shipped in 20-foot custom containers on rail and vessels meaning it can be transported domestically and internationally.

This company notes this method also meets the requirements under the federal government’s Bill C-48, also known as the Tanker Ban Bill.

“Establishing a transportation solution for Canadian energy that delivers tremendous value for local producers while satisfying the demand for our energy internationally is our priority,” added Zhang.
